Dental sedation is used for a handful of treatments, especially restorative ones. If you struggle with anxiety at the dentist, sedation calms your nerves and makes the appointment much easier. Sedation is also used for more complicated dental procedures. What’s being under sedation like?
Nitrous oxide is also called “laughing gas.” We place a mask over your nose, letting you breathe in a sweet-smelling gas. You’ll fall into a pleasant, sleepy state, but you won’t lose consciousness or your sense of your surroundings. When your appointment is done, we’ll remove the mask. In a few minutes, you’ll be back to normal and able to drive yourself home. If you feel hesitant about this idea, arrange a ride beforehand.
Oral Conscious Sedation
The other sedation option we offer comes in the form of a prescription medication. You take the pill before your appointment, so by the time your treatment starts, you’ll be very relaxed. You may fall asleep during your treatment, but you won’t lose consciousness and will easily wake up. Because the effects of oral conscious sedation last longer than nitrous oxide, you’ll need someone to drive you home.
Is Dental Sedation Safe?
Both nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation are safer than general anesthesia because you remain conscious. Before we recommend sedation, we always take a close look at your medical history, current health status, and the treatment we’ll be doing. Your safety is our #1 priority. If we believe sedation isn’t right for you, we won’t recommend it.
