Teeth Whitening Facts vs. Myths

If you want a whiter, brighter smile, you’re probably thinking about teeth whitening. There are a few ways to go about this, though not all the methods are effective. Here are the facts vs. myths on whitening your teeth.

Fact: DIY Treatments Are Risky

Before considering whitening products or professional whitening, many people try at-home methods they find online. A common myth is that because these treatments are “natural,” they’re safe. The fact is that using something like hydrogen peroxide or lemon juice can actually damage your teeth. Baking soda and activated charcoal are also risky because they’re both abrasive and can thin your enamel.

Fact: Over-the-Counter Whitening Products Aren’t That Effective

You can find whitening toothpaste, strips, and trays at the store. You might have heard the myth that you’ll get professional-level results. In reality, whitening toothpaste doesn’t have much of an impact. Toothpaste with bleaching ingredients doesn’t stay on your teeth long enough to remove deep stains, while abrasive pastes can thin your enamel. Strips are a bit more effective because they stay on your teeth longer, but the ingredients aren’t that strong. Because over-the-counter trays aren’t custom-made, the gel tends to leak, which affects your results.

Fact: Professional Whitening Gives the Best Results

If you want a big change, professional whitening works best. Dr. Michael Giovannini uses the KöR deep bleaching system. It can whiten your teeth by up to 16 shades. After two weeks of at-home whitening with custom trays, you’ll get a final treatment at our office to finish the job. We also offer one-visit whitening and at-home whitening with custom trays or one-size trays, which are more affordable.
