Should You Use Fake Teeth for Halloween?

We don’t want to discourage you from perfecting your vampire costume with a pair of fake Halloween teeth. But if you’re going to wear them, there are some things you can do to keep those teeth from causing your mouth any harm.

Make Sure They Stay Clean

Perhaps the most important rule of wearing fake Halloween teeth is to keep them clean. Like anything you put in your mouth, whether it’s a retainer or a mouthguard, you need to be sure that it’s clean and free of any bacteria. Brush the costume teeth lightly with toothpaste or even rinse them with a dental cleaner like Efferdent.

It’s also important that your real teeth are clean before you pop in the fake ones. By keeping your natural teeth clean, you reduce the risk of developing cavities or any other problems in your mouth. Make sure to floss and brush your teeth before you put in your Halloween teeth so no bacteria or food particles will be lingering on your teeth and gums while you’re wearing the fake teeth.

Limit the Amount of Time You Wear Fake Teeth

While they may complete the look, try not to wear your fake Halloween teeth for too long. The American Dental Association strongly recommends limiting the amount of time you wear your fake teeth, advising that you remove them before you eat and drink to prevent food from getting stuck in your natural teeth and remaining trapped there for hours.

Be Careful If You Have Veneers

If you have veneers or any other type of tooth replacement in your mouth, you may want to reconsider the fake Halloween teeth. Fake teeth that contain a putty or adhesive should not be placed on veneers as that kind of product can cause damage to the surface of the veneer. So be careful or skip the fake teeth altogether if you don’t want to ruin your veneers.
